Biography

Andreas Vieli is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Zurich, specializing in Glaciology and Geomorphodynamics. He holds a diploma in Physics from ETH Zürich and completed his Ph.D. in Natural Sciences at the same institution. His research focuses on glacier dynamics and the processes that govern them, including the dynamics of calving glaciers, ice sheet dynamics, and their interactions with ocean systems. He employs flow modeling techniques to study glaciers and ice sheets and is interested in geomorphodynamics in high mountain areas. Vieli is involved in numerous collaborative research projects, such as GLAMOS, the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network, and PERMOS, which monitors permafrost. After serving as a lecturer and reader at Durham University in the UK, he took on his current role, leading the Glaciology Geomorphodynamics Group at the University of Zurich since 2013.
