Biography

Andrei Marmor is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Philosophy and Law and the Director of the Program in Ethics and Public Life at Cornell University. Prior to joining Cornell in 2015, he was a Professor of Law at the University of Southern California. He obtained law and philosophy degrees from Tel Aviv University, Israel, and a D.Phil from Oxford University, UK. Marmor returned to Tel Aviv University where he taught for ten years. His research interests span philosophy of law, moral and social-political philosophy, and philosophy of language. Marmor has published dozens of articles and six book monographs, including Social Conventions: Language Law (Princeton, 2009), Philosophy of Law (Princeton, 2011), and Language and Law (Oxford, 2014). His works have been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, and Italian. Marmor is also the founding editor of the Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy and the editor of important volumes in legal philosophy, including Philosophical Foundations of Language and Law (with Scott Soames, Oxford 2011) and the Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Law. He engages in discussions on topics like health, economy, and pandemic responses through a debate series.
