Biography

Andrés Cisneros-Montemayor is a resource economist specializing in ocean coastal social-ecological systems. Originally from the fishing port of Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, he is deeply involved in fisheries economics. His work supports equitable development and combats inequitable systems by melding qualitative and quantitative evidence. This includes global estimates of the economic value of marine ecotourism, the seafood consumption of coastal Indigenous Peoples, and countries' capacity to establish an equitable Blue Economy. He is the Deputy Director of the Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Center, which is one of the largest interdisciplinary collaborative research networks focused on social equity, well-being, and public health in coastal marine contexts around the world. Andrés is actively engaged in negotiations and debates about equity in sustainable development internationally and within Canada, currently serving on the scientific advisory committee for the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative, which aims to increase Indigenous access to and capacity in fisheries and aquaculture. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, 20 book chapters, a textbook, and numerous technical reports and science communication articles, and he leads a lab that supports students around the world, passionate about learning and supporting coastal communities.
