Biography

Andres Sevtsuk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He leads the City Form Lab, focusing on the interaction between built environments and sustainable travel behavior, as well as the public qualities of cities. His work emphasizes making urban environments more walkable, sustainable, and equitable by bridging urban design, spatial analytics, and mobility research. Sevtsuk is the author of the Urban Network Analysis framework and corresponding software tools, which facilitate the modeling of pedestrian activity in cities and aid in coordinating land use and transportation development to reduce carbon emissions. He has published numerous papers and authored a book titled “Street Commerce: Creating Vibrant Urban Sidewalks.” His research has involved collaboration with city governments and international organizations to develop urban designs and policies in rapidly growing environments across countries like Indonesia, Australia, Lebanon, Estonia, and Singapore. Additionally, he teaches various courses at MIT, including Introduction to Urban Design and Development, and is set to launch a course on Introduction to Pedestrian Mobility in Cities. Before joining MIT, he served as an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard Graduate School of Design.
