Biography

Andres Vidal-Itriago has a dedicated research career in neuroscience, particularly focused on studying microglial biology. With over five years of research experience in laboratories across Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Sydney, he obtained his Master’s degree in Translational Medicine from the University of Barcelona. During his master's, he studied the role of POMC neurons in regulating energy balance using mouse models. In 2016, he joined the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Academisch Medisch Centrum in Amsterdam, researching the role of microglia in obesity and diabetes. In 2018, he moved to Sydney to pursue a PhD at Macquarie University, working in Dr. Marco Morsch's group on microglia-neuron interactions in neurodegeneration. He is currently establishing novel methods to study microglia in zebrafish, employing techniques such as in vivo confocal imaging and 3D rendering electron microscopy. Andres received a poster presentation award at the Macquarie Neurodegeneration Meeting in 2019 and the Magnified-Justin Yerbury Travel Scholarship for attending the 30th International Symposium on ALS/MND.
