Biography

Andrew Alter is an Associate Professor in Music Studies at Macquarie University, Sydney, where he teaches and researches a diverse range of sub-disciplines in popular music studies, ethnomusicology, composition, and music theory. His primary research focuses on traditional and popular music in India and Indonesia, as well as World Music practice in Australia. An active performer, Alter's interests cover an eclectic mix of world music and experimental genres, including a range of musical practices involving piano, cello, and vocal ensembles, particularly Indonesian gamelan. He currently leads the Macquarie University gamelan ensemble (Gema Nada). As an ethnomusicologist, Alter has published widely in leading journals within the field and is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Association for the Study of Popular Music and the Society for Ethnomusicology. He contributed to reference works such as Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism and the New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments. Among his publications are two books: "Dancing Devtā: Drums, Power, and Possession in Music from Garhwal, North India" (2008) and "Musical Sound Spaces: Listening to the History of Uttarakhand Himalayas" (2014).
