Biography

Andrew Arsan is a historian of the Arab world with a particular interest in the region's cultural, political, and intellectual history, European imperialism, and the Middle East and North Africa. He is the author of several books, including the prize-winning 'Interlopers of Empire' (2014), a study of contemporary Lebanon, and 'Fragments' (2018), and he co-edited a major collection on the mandate states of the Middle East. His articles have been published in prominent journals such as Comparative Studies in Society and History, Modern Intellectual History, and the Journal of Global History. Andrew is currently completing a new political intellectual history titled 'Arab Twentieth Century' for publication with Basic Books Allen Lane. Previously, he held positions at Birkbeck and Princeton, and from 2016-2017, he served as Chaire Ganshof van der Meersch at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In 2018, he was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize in History. He is a founding editor of the Journal of Middle East and North African Migration Studies and has served as the reviews editor for the Historical Journal. Born in Beirut and raised between Lebanon, France, and the United Kingdom, Andrew has taught and co-taught a range of courses in Middle Eastern, imperial, and global history at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He welcomes inquiries from prospective graduate students interested in the history of the Arab world from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on present-day Lebanon and Syria's intellectual and cultural history.
