Dr. Andrew Balmer

Biography

Andrew Balmer is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester. His research primarily focuses on the sociology of everyday life, exploring themes such as lying, deception, secrecy, and information management in routine interactions. He is actively engaged in utilizing creative qualitative methodologies, particularly in the context of public engagement with science. Balmer’s recent work investigates the sociological implications of the Mass Observation Project. He has also conducted research on scientific practices relating to health and illness, with case studies centered on topics like synthetic biology and dementia. As a supervisor, he is currently mentoring several PhD students on various projects involving themes of belonging, higher education, sexuality, and video game ethnography. His expertise aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations in research and innovation. Balmer has served as an editor for the journal Sociology and is involved in various research beacons and institutes at Manchester, emphasizing responsible research innovation in the social sciences.
