Andrew Barry studied Natural Sciences, History, and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge University. He subsequently held a joint SERC/ESRC studentship at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex and completed his DPhil in Science and Technology Studies in 1988. He held lectureships in the Department of Human Sciences at Brunel University from 1987 to 1991 and in the Department of Sociology at Goldsmiths’ College from 1991 to 2006. Andrew moved to the University of Oxford in 2006, becoming a Reader in Geography, and later a Professor of Political Geography in the School of Geography and the Environment, as well as serving as Academic Director of the Masters programme in Nature, Society, and Environmental Policy. Andrew has published works such as 'Political Machines: Governing Technological Society' (2001), which focuses on the politics of science and technology in the European Union. His recent books include 'Interdisciplinarity: Reconfigurations of the Social and Natural Sciences' (2013) and 'Material Politics: Disputes Over Pipeline' (2013). He has been involved in innovative initiatives in social geographical theory and held various visiting positions at institutions including New York University, Istanbul Technical University, and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
