Biography

Andy Beale is currently a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at University College London and a Group Leader at the Research Complex Harwell located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer and co-owner of Finden Ltd, which was incorporated in 2012, and serves as Deputy Director of the EPSRC-sponsored UK Catalysis Hub. Beale's research focuses on the study of functional materials utilized in heterogeneous catalysts, energy storage, and novel chemical imaging techniques employing X-ray scattering and spectroscopic methods. His work emphasizes dynamic conditions, leading to advances such as the first publication on 5D X-ray diffraction imaging in a working catalytic reactor. Andy earned his BSc from the University of Sussex and subsequently obtained a PhD from the Royal Institution of Great Britain, emphasizing in situ X-ray crystallization studies of mixed oxide materials. He held various academic positions, including Postdoctoral Fellow, VENI Research Fellow, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis at Utrecht University. Beale returned to the UK and joined UCL in 2013 as an EPSRC Early Career Fellow, contributing to several high-profile committees including the STFC Science Board and the EPSRC college.
