Dr. Andrew Bellisari

Biography

Andrew Bellisari is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Purdue University. His research focuses on Modern France and its colonial empire, emphasizing the critical areas of warfare, state-building, civil society, and the intricacies of decolonization. Dr. Bellisari's significant book project delves into everyday logistics during decolonization, questioning how nations transition from theoretical independence to practical autonomy. He examines the complex dimensions of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) and the broader implications of colonial disentanglement. His scholarly work has been published in notable journals including the Journal of Contemporary History and Journal of North African Studies. Prior to his position at Purdue, he was a founding faculty member at Fulbright University Vietnam and a Program Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. Dr. Bellisari holds a B.A. in History from Rutgers University, an M.A., and a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University. His research efforts have been supported by various grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Krupp Foundation. He is currently welcoming graduate students interested in researching topics related to the history of the modern French colonial empire and its legacies.
