Dr. Andrew Berchuck is the Director of the Duke Division of Gynecologic Oncology and holds the James M. Ingram Distinguished Professorship. He is a practicing oncologist specializing in the surgical and chemotherapy management of women with ovarian, endometrial, and lower genital tract cancers, and is particularly known for advancing minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical approaches. He has developed a significant research program focused on understanding molecular-genetic alterations that contribute to the malignant transformation of the ovarian and endometrial epithelium. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications, his research objectives include identifying ovarian cancer susceptibility polymorphisms through a population-based case-control molecular epidemiologic study, as well as leveraging genomic approaches to elucidate the molecular heterogeneity of ovarian cancer. His research efforts have been recognized both nationally and internationally, earning him numerous awards for oral presentations at various meeting venues. Previously, he served as President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and chaired the scientific advisory committee for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Additionally, he leads the steering committee for the international Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, which comprises 50 case-control studies aimed at identifying ovarian cancer susceptibility polymorphisms.
