Biography

Andrew M. Blades is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol, specializing in twentieth-century American literature with a focus on the intersection of medicine and literature. He is currently working on a monograph titled 'Retroviral Writings', which examines the works of poets such as Thom Gunn, Mark Doty, and James Merrill, particularly in the context of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. Blades is interested in exploring how these writers position their work within the historical literary continuum of AIDS. Additionally, he investigates the early years of the AIDS epidemic and its impact on American literature throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His research interests extend to queer and LGBTQ+ writing as well as mental health literature. Blades is also a co-editor of the collection 'Poetry Dictionary', published by Liverpool University Press in 2020, which discusses the interplay between poetry and lexicography. He encourages postgraduate research students to engage with topics related to HIV/AIDS literature, queer writing, and the medical humanities more broadly.
