Dr. Andrew Botterell

Biography

Andrew Botterell joined Western University in 2007 and has played a vital role in both teaching and research at Western Law. His impressive credentials include a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) from McGill University, a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto. He has published extensively, with works appearing in prestigious journals such as Jurisprudence, Legal Theory, Law & Philosophy, and the Criminal Justice Ethics journal. His legal teaching and research interests are primarily in the areas of philosophy, criminal law, and private law theory. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he was named “Professor of the Year” for 2013-14 and received the Faculty’s Award for Teaching Excellence for 2017-18. In addition to his teaching duties, Andrew has held several administrative positions at Western Law, including Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies from 2019 to 2022 and Associate Dean (Academic) for the 2023-2024 academic year. He will also serve as Acting Dean in 2024-2025. He is currently seeking graduate students whose research interests align with his expertise in Philosophy of Law, Criminal Law, and Tort/Property/Restitution.
