Biography

Andrew Breen is a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow and Deputy Group Leader in the Engineering Microstructures group at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sydney. He earned his PhD in 2014 from the University of Sydney, focusing on developing advanced atom probe tomography characterization techniques for engineering materials. Following his doctorate, he remained at the University as an atom probe support engineer until 2016. Andrew undertook a prestigious Humboldt Fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in Germany to directly observe hydrogen in metals. He returned to the University of Sydney in 2019 to lead an AUSMURI funded project that centers on understanding structure-property-processing relationships in additively manufactured alloys. His research is currently funded under an ARC linkage project aimed at sustainable robust Australian Ni-based superalloy manufacturing, in collaboration with Western Australian Specialty Alloys Pty Ltd (WASA). Andrew is recognized as a leading expert in microstructural characterization, particularly advanced atom probe analysis techniques.
