Biography

Andrew Chesher is the William Stanley Jevons Professor of Economics at University College London, specializing in Economic Measurement. From 1984 to 1999, he served as a Professor of Econometrics at the University of Bristol. He is an Honorary Professor at Beihang University in Beijing and has also worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. In 2017, he was awarded a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa by the University of Birmingham. Chesher is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences, and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. He has held significant roles including Chair of the UK Economic and Social Research Council’s Research Grants Board and President of the Royal Economic Society. He is the founding Director of the Centre for Microdata Methods and Practice, a leading institution for the development and application of methods to understand economic motivations and behaviors. His research has influenced major policies, including work for the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program. Notable projects include modeling the effects of highway conditions on vehicle operating costs in Brazil and India, as well as analyzing factors affecting labor force participation and population policy in Malaysia during the 1990s.
