Biography

Andrew Counter joined New College Sub-Faculty of French in 2015. He previously held positions at King's College London (2012-2015) and Gonville Caius College, Cambridge (2009-2012), as well as a Research Fellowship at St John's College, Cambridge (2008-2009). His teaching focuses on various aspects of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, including detailed supervision of extended essays and lectures that emphasize the political and cultural contexts of the literature of the time. Counter's research explores the intersections of law, politics, sexuality, and literature in France from the Revolution to World War II, employing a broad range of methodologies. His notable works include 'Inheritance Nineteenth-Century French Culture' and 'The Amorous Restoration: Love, Sex, Politics Early Nineteenth-Century France', the latter co-winning the Modern Language Association's Jeanne Scaglione Prize for French and Francophone Studies in 2017. He has received numerous research grants and is keen to engage with prospective graduate students interested in researching aspects of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French literature, particularly in the study of sexuality in literature.
