Biography

Andrew Cumpstey is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton and a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He focuses on 'bench to bedside' research that investigates how the body handles oxygen, specifically in the context of oxygen physiology and therapy, particularly during major surgery. His clinical background encompasses general medicine, anaesthesia, and intensive care medicine, with training in Cambridge, Oxford, Taunton, and Southampton. He completed his PhD at the University of Southampton, where he explored the effects of oxygen therapy and oxidative stress during major surgery and critical illness. In 2022, he received the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's National Research Award for his work. His research interests include improving clinical outcomes in major surgery and intensive care through translational clinical studies in oxygen physiology and therapy, as well as examining physiological changes in extreme environments such as high altitude and space. He collaborates with the European Space Agency on studies using overwintering models in Antarctica to explore the physiological challenges of long-term isolation experienced during space travel. He is also a member of the Xtreme Everest medical research team, involved in projects in high altitude regions, and has made numerous mountaineering ascents in remote areas including the Arctic, Greenland, and Morocco.
