Biography

Andrew Dawes was a prominent violinist and Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia, born in High River, Alberta. His illustrious career spanned decades, during which he became celebrated as one of the most distinguished violinists Canada has ever produced. Dawes had remarkable achievements, including receiving the Prix de Virtuosité from the Conservatoire of Geneva, Switzerland, with the highest marks awarded. He was a founding member of the Orford String Quartet for 26 years, giving over 3,000 concerts across all six continents and recording more than 60 albums. In 1992, he was appointed to the faculty at UBC to teach violin and chamber music, having previously taught at the University of Toronto for over 20 years. He performed with the Tokyo String Quartet, playing a historic Stradivarius violin. In addition to his teaching, Dawes served on juries for several prestigious competitions and won numerous awards, including the Order of Canada and multiple Juno Awards. He was recognized for his excellence in performance and development by the University of British Columbia. Throughout his life, he participated in various summer festivals and was appointed as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at McGill University. Dawes passed away in Aldearrubia, Spain, on October 30, 2022, remembered for his exceptional talent and mentorship in the field of music.
