Dr. Andrew Demchuk

Biography

Andrew Demchuk is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He serves as the Director of the Calgary Stroke Program at Alberta Health Services. Dr. Demchuk completed his undergraduate education in 1989 at the University of Regina and earned his medical degree with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 1993. He underwent residency training in neurology at the University of Calgary from 1993 to 1997, followed by a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease at the University of Texas-Houston from 1997 to 1999 under the mentorship of Dr. J.C. Grotta. His research interests primarily focus on vascular imaging and the establishment of target populations for new stroke treatments based on imaging tests conducted in emergency settings. In addition to his research and clinical duties, Dr. Demchuk is an active member of several local, national, and international committees, having previously served as the board chair of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT, and Nunavut, and being a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Stroke Consortium. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee for the European Stroke Conference. Dr. Demchuk has received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including the Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize from the American Academy of Neurology in 2003 and the Keith W. Brownell Neurology Teaching Award for resident teaching in 2006. He currently holds a scholar award from the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR).
