Dr. Andrew Erskine

Biography

Professor Andrew Erskine specializes in Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh. He completed his undergraduate studies in Ancient History and Philosophy at New College, Oxford, where he also pursued doctoral work focusing on political thought in the Hellenistic Stoa, under the supervision of George Forrest and Peter Derow. Erskine joined the University of Edinburgh in 2005 and became a Professor of Ancient History in 2007. Prior to his current position, he held academic roles at the University of Birmingham, University College Swansea, University College Dublin, and University of Galway, where he was a Professor of Classics. He has also received notable fellowships including a Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and Leverhulme Research Fellowships. His research interests are centered on Hellenistic history and thought, examining cultural interactions, ethnicity, and local identities during the time of Roman expansion into the Greek world. Additionally, Erskine has played a significant role in academic publishing as a series editor and as a member of various editorial boards.
