Biography

Andrew Ewald is an Associate Professor at the Department of Cell Biology at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Center for Cell Dynamics. He holds additional appointments at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Oncology. He received his undergraduate degree in physics with honors from Haverford College and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular physics from the California Institute of Technology. Following his doctoral studies, he completed postdoctoral work with Zena Werb focusing on mammary biology and cancer at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ewald joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2008, where he serves as the director of the Department of Cell Biology and the Giovanis Institute for Translational Cell Biology, holding the Virginia De Acetis Professorship in Basic Cancer Research. His research aims to understand how cells build organs and how cellular processes contribute to cancer metastasis. His lab has identified a unique class of breast cancer cells that lead the process of invasion into surrounding tissues, a critical step in cancer metastasis. Further research is planned to examine these cells as viable targets for therapy. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Association for Cancer Research, the Society for Developmental Biology, and the American Society for Cell Biology. His work was recognized with the 2011 Morphological Sciences Award from the American Association of Anatomists for his contributions to the field of epithelial morphogenesis.
