Biography

Andrew Martin Fischer is a Professor of Inequality and Social Protection at the International Institute of Social Studies, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He specializes in demography and development economics, working extensively on issues related to poverty, inequality, social policy, and international development. Fischer earned his Ph.D. in Development Studies from the London School of Economics (LSE), where his research focused on China’s regional development strategies and their impact on ethnic minorities, particularly Tibetans and Uyghurs. He has authored several significant works, including 'Disempowered Development: Tibet and China: A Study in Economics of Marginalization' (Lexington Books, 2014) and numerous articles published in leading journals like Population and Development Review and China Quarterly. With 30 years of experience in international development, Fischer has worked across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. He also spent seven years living with Tibetan refugees in India and has conducted extensive research on the political economy of social policy in developing countries. He is currently engaged in research that explores the role of redistribution in development across local, regional, and global contexts.
