Biography

Andrew J P Flack is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol, specializing in Environmental Sensory History. His research explores human interactions with the non-human animal world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a particular focus on the sensory dimensions of these relationships. Currently, Flack is completing a book titled 'Dark Natures: Finding Life in Shadows', which is set to be published by the University of Chicago Press. This work examines historical interactions with dark environments such as caves, the deep ocean, and nighttime settings, and it interrogates how these environments shape our understanding of the natural world. Flack's research also includes a recent AHRC Leadership Fellowship that investigated the understandings of dark-dwelling creatures and their implications for modern concepts of ability and disability. His previous works have focused on the Bristol Zoo Gardens from 1835 to the early twenty-first century, emphasizing the interplay between animal history, environmental contexts, and cultural perceptions of nature. Flack's media presence includes contributions to BBC Radio and other platforms, where he discusses topics related to his expertise.
