Biography

Professor Andrew Gewirth received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1981 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1987. He joined the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1988 after completing postdoctoral work at the University of Texas at Austin. His research group focuses on the structure and reactivity of surfaces and interfaces, utilizing local probe microscopies in conjunction with electrochemical, computational, and spectroscopic methods. A key aspect of their work involves investigating metal surfaces in electrochemical environments to address future energy remediation needs, with a recent emphasis on the four-electron electroreduction of O2 to H2O. Gewirth’s insights from these studies contribute to the design of materials that exhibit enhanced activity for energy-related applications. His group also examines the fundamental properties of electrified solid-liquid interfaces using vibrational spectroscopy and “force spectroscopy” to study electrode materials. Additionally, they explore the behavior of supported phospholipid bilayers and their interaction with proteins, providing valuable insights into cell membrane constituents and functions.
