Biography

Andrew Issekutz is a prominent Pediatric Immunologist who has been active in the research field since joining Dalhousie University and IWK Health Centre in 1979. His research program focuses on understanding how immune cells respond to infections and injuries, the mechanisms of self-damaging responses, and aspects of allergy and autoimmune diseases, characterized by tissue inflammation. He is noted for identifying TNF alpha, a critical protein produced by immune cells, as a key factor in the infiltration of leukocytes in joints during conditions like arthritis, leading to the development of therapies targeting TNF for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, his work has elucidated the role of selectin adhesion molecules in the migration of leukocytes during inflammatory responses. Post-retirement, he has continued his contributions in an advisory role within the Pediatrics Division of Immunology and maintained an interest in exploring how human immunoglobulin G (IgG) can protect against infections and modulate immune responses. His research has led to new insights into NK cell function and therapeutic applications in various autoimmune inflammatory diseases.
