Andrew Jackson is a Professor of Geophysics at ETH Zurich, where he has been since January 2006. He leads the Earth Planetary Magnetism group within the Institute of Geophysics. Originating from Bridlington, England, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences with a major in Physics from the University of Cambridge, and completed his PhD in collaboration with the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh. After a postdoctoral position at Harvard University, he received a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at Oxford University. He then moved to the University of Leeds, progressing from Lecturer to Reader and ultimately to Professor of Mathematical Geophysics. His research primarily focuses on the application of mathematical methods to geoscience problems, particularly geomagnetism, which involves the study of the generation and evolution of Earth's magnetic field. His work includes the use of gravity gradiometry for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and he has significant experience with remote sensing problems and numerical simulations in magnetohydrodynamics. A notable contributor to the European Space Agency's Swarm mission, he has been actively involved in measuring the Earth's magnetic field since its successful launch in 2013. He was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2007.
The GRE is mandatory for students who did not obtain their Bachelor's degree in an EU/EFTA state. Some departments (e.g., Computer Science) have specific ECTS credit requirements in core subjects.
