Biography

Andrew James Johnston is a full professor of English Philology at the Free University of Berlin, focusing on Medieval and Renaissance literature. He has held various roles in academic leadership, including serving as the managing director of the Institute for English Philology and as a co-speaker of the Excellence Cluster 'Temporal Communities'. His research interests encompass literary studies, particularly how literature engages with concepts of temporality across cultures and epochs. He is engaged in projects like 'Imagining Dark Age Britain', which examines the production of literature from historical narratives, and leads the DFG Research Project on the contributions of medieval texts to contemporary understanding of tradition and renewal. Johnston has published extensively in medieval studies, contributing to both monographs and edited collections. He also participates actively in academic societies and editorial boards, enhancing the interdisciplinary connections between literature, history, and cultural studies.
