Biography

Andrew Jorgenson is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, specializing in environmental sociology and global political economy. His research focuses on macro-comparative studies of human dimensions of global and regional environmental change, specifically the societal causes and consequences of the climate crisis. He employs a methodological pluralism approach, predominantly utilizing statistical modeling techniques to analyze social and environmental data across various scales. Jorgenson has published widely in leading sociological journals, including the American Sociological Review and Nature Communications, receiving numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the Fred Buttel Distinguished Contribution Award. He co-authored 'Super Polluters: Tackling the World’s Largest Sites of Climate-Disrupting Emissions' and has edited various volumes and special issues. Jorgenson's research is funded by prestigious institutions such as Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the National Science Foundation. He also served as the chair of the Environmental Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association and has recently been appointed to the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council. Before joining UBC, he was the chair of the Department of Sociology and Professor of Environmental Studies at Boston College, where he supervised numerous doctoral students who have gone on to secure tenure-track faculty positions.
