Biography

Andrew Klein is a broadly trained physical geographer with a strong background in Geographic Information Science (GISci). His research has contributed significantly to the understanding of the cryosphere and has developed applied GISci and remote sensing techniques in the study of Earth’s cold regions. Klein has advanced remote sensing applications for seasonal snow cover and has studied the retreat of tropical glaciers. Over the past 15 years, he has contributed to an extensive monitoring program investigating the impact of scientific operations on the local environment in Antarctica, aiding the United States Antarctic Program in fulfilling its obligations under the Antarctic Treaty. He employs his expertise in GISci to improve K-12 education concerning these topics and continues to serve the Geography Department and the larger University community with a strong emphasis on teaching and service. Klein was instrumental in the development of the B.S. Geographic Information Science Technology Faculty Program and now leads a new Masters in Geoscience degree focusing on the application of Geographic Information Science Technology in the Energy Industry. He is currently a speaker in the Faculty Senate and chair of the University’s Core Curriculum Council, working diligently on general education issues and the revision of the University's International Cultural Diversity graduation requirement.
