He employs a variety of research tools including electroencephalography (EEG), polysomnography (PSG), computer signal analysis modeling, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). His current studies involve defining the physiological correlates of sleep complaints, studying the relationship between EEG data recorded during non-REM sleep and daytime function, and developing new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments for insomnia.
