Biography

Andrew Laird is the John Rowe Workman Distinguished Professor of Classics and Humanities at Brown University, where he also directs the Center for the Study of the Early Modern World. His research encompasses ancient Greece, Rome, the European Renaissance, and the colonial Americas. Laird has authored notable publications including 'Powers of Expression, Expressions of Power' and 'Ancient Literary Criticism,' both with Oxford University Press. His recent work, 'Aztec Latin,' which will be published by Oxford University Press in 2024, explores the educational achievements of indigenous scholars in sixteenth-century Mexico and has earned him the 2025 Miriam Usher Chrisman Prize. Laird has participated in numerous academic events, including talks at Columbia University and the Max Planck Institute, and has delivered plenary addresses at international conferences. His ongoing projects include translating Petrarch’s 'Africa' for the Harvard Tatti Renaissance Library.
