Andrew MacFarlane is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on the electronic and magnetic properties of crystalline solids, particularly strongly correlated materials such as cuprate high-temperature superconductors. He utilizes advanced techniques including Magnetic Resonance, β-detected NMR, NQR, and muon spin rotation in his work. MacFarlane's ongoing studies involve the synthesis of thin solid films, often using pulsed laser deposition, and the analysis of local magnetic properties near interfaces. He also conducts research on nanostructured solids, including arrays of noble metal nanoparticles. MacFarlane is an active member of the UBC Quantum Matter Institute and has been involved in several NSERC CREATE programmes, offering opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research. He welcomes highly motivated graduate students in Chemistry and Physics to reach out regarding potential projects. MacFarlane completed his B.Sc. at the University of Victoria and earned his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Orsay and further research at TRIUMF.
