Dr. Andrew Markham

Biography

Andrew Markham is a Professor at the University of Oxford in the Department of Computer Science, where he leads research on sensors, signal processing, and machine learning, particularly within the context of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). His work focuses on enabling machines to understand the physical world by researching methods to track and localize people, animals, and objects, especially in challenging environments such as underground or indoors where conventional technologies like GPS may fail. Markham's research increasingly employs data-driven and physics-informed approaches to learn from noisy sensor data. He is also involved in conservation technology through his role on the management committee of the Intelligent Earth Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). Markham obtained his PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2008, where he investigated the design and implementation of a wildlife tracking system using heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. He has published extensively, contributing to several conference proceedings and journals. Markham's academic career includes positions as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, culminating in his appointment as a full Professor in 2021.
