Dr. Andrew Mckechanie

Biography

Andrew McKechanie is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Edinburgh, where he holds a pivotal role in the research of autism, fragile X syndrome, and intellectual disabilities at the Patrick Wild Centre for Research. He began his career in psychiatric training in North Yorkshire and Edinburgh, later taking on the position of clinical lecturer focusing on learning disabilities in 2008. His research emphasizes the genetic basis of intellectual disability and investigates the contribution of small changes in the genetic code to increased susceptibility to mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities. Since the establishment of the Patrick Wild Centre in 2010, he has worked extensively on uncovering insights into fragile X syndrome using large datasets. In addition to his clinical work as a consultant psychiatrist for NHS Lothian's Intellectual Disability Service, McKechanie is an active board advisor for Scottish Autism, a charity that offers specialized services for individuals with autism and support for families and professionals involved. He is also involved in multiple affiliations including the Royal Society of Edinburgh Young Academy of Scotland and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
