Biography

Professor Andrew Meares is the Deputy Director of the ANU School of Cybernetics and leads the Cybernetic Futures group. An award-winning photojournalist, Meares spent decades working at the Sydney Morning Herald, where he covered a wide range of topics including politics, protests, and natural disasters. His extensive industry research activities have involved the creation, curation, and circulation of images, particularly during the transition from darkroom to digital printing. Meares served as the president of the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery from 2015 to 2017 and acted as a senior adviser to the Leader of the Opposition from 2017 to 2019. Since joining ANU in 2019, he has contributed as a Master course convenor and an Education Experience lead while also taking on roles in design and exhibition curation. Notably, he led the curation of the exhibition 'Australian Cybernetic: Point in Time' in 2022 and is the lead author for the associated exhibition book set to be published in 2024. Meares is also involved in the supervision of research students, guiding projects that aim to understand how information is delivered and accessed in Australia's digital systems.
