Dr. Andrew Miles

Biography

Andrew Miles is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester, having had a distinguished academic career since the mid-1980s. His professional journey includes academic positions at Keele, Warwick, Cardiff, and Birmingham, where he worked until 2002 before taking a brief hiatus from academia. During this time, he served as a consultant in the cultural sector, applying his training as a social scientist to research and evaluate arts interventions in criminal justice settings. In 2004, he joined the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC) part-time, focusing on research methods related to cultural sector projects. By 2011, he was named the convenor for CRESC’s core research theme on ‘Trajectories of Participation Inequality’. His extensive research interests center around cultural stratification, particularly class issues, social mobility, and cultural participation. He is currently leading a major AHRC project, ‘Understanding Everyday Participation – Articulating Cultural Values’, while also contributing as a co-investigator on the EPSRC 'Step-Change' travel and transport behaviour project. An active member of the Great British Class Survey team, he has co-authored several impactful publications, shedding light on contemporary social class dynamics in the UK.
