Biography

Andrew Muroyama obtained his Ph.D. in Cell Biology while working as an NSF-GRFP fellow with Dr. Terry Lechler at Duke University. He later conducted postdoctoral work in the lab of Dr. Dominique Bergmann at Stanford University, where he was awarded the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. He joined the faculty at the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 2021. His research focuses on understanding the cellular mechanisms that govern leaf development in plants, particularly how cells encode and propagate spatial information during organogenesis. Muroyama investigates the evolutionarily divergent mechanisms of cytoskeletal organization, cell polarity, and organelle trafficking that pattern plant tissues. His research is anticipated to contribute to agricultural innovations aimed at increasing yields through morphological engineering and to provide insights into regenerative medicine.
