Biography

Andrew Murphy is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the intersections of politics and religion within historical and contemporary contexts. He is particularly interested in the emergence of religious liberty and the liberty of conscience in early modern England and America, as well as the ongoing ramifications of these debates in American politics. Murphy has authored significant works including 'William Penn: Life' (Oxford, 2019) and 'Liberty, Conscience, Toleration: Political Thought of William Penn' (Oxford, 2016). He also co-edited the volume 'Worlds of William Penn' (Rutgers, 2019) with John Smolenski and has published an edition of Penn's political writings. His earlier work, 'Conscience and Community: Revisiting Toleration and Religious Dissent in Early Modern England and America' (Penn State, 2001), laid the groundwork for much of his current research. His ongoing projects explore topics such as political martyrdom and its impact on collective memory and political discourse.
