Dr. Andrew Nurkin

Biography

Andrew Crowell Nurkin is the Hart Associate Professor of Practice in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and the Director of the Hart Leadership Program. He holds an MFA in poetry from Vermont College, an M.Div. from Yale University, and an A.B. from Duke University. Andrew has extensive experience in civic engagement, having led public programs at one of the largest public library systems in the country. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of Princeton AlumniCorps, a national nonprofit organization focused on building civic leadership skills among alumni. Throughout his career, Andrew has developed innovative civic engagement programs and initiatives that emphasize community-based research and social change through the arts. He is a well-regarded poet, community organizer, and thought leader in the realm of civic and political engagement in the 21st century. Andrew believes in the power of arts to convey truths and engage communities, stating that facilitative leadership involves listening deeply and synthesizing diverse perspectives. His upcoming courses include PPS 270: Lead the Way Durham and PPS 415: Servant Leadership in Democracy, focusing on community-based leadership and civic engagement.
