Biography

Andrew Pitel is an Assistant Instructional Professor in the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities within the Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago. He completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 2021 after earning a BA from Evergreen State College in 2010. His teaching and research interests focus on Kant, Early Modern Philosophy, and Metaphysics, emphasizing historical and theoretical aspects across both late medieval and early modern periods. His dissertation examined Kant's denial of knowability in relation to a longer tradition of skepticism and substance in philosophical thought. He is actively involved in mentoring MAPH students in their philosophical inquiries, guiding them through course selection and advising their MA projects. Pitel has taught various courses, including in-depth studies on Spinoza’s Ethics and Philosophy's relationship with literature. His ongoing research explores the nature of knowability and the concept of substance as articulated by Locke and Kant, alongside contributions to the discussion of transcendental philosophy in relation to the medieval tradition. He aims to help students navigate philosophical concepts and fields, fostering their interest in deeper philosophical education and exploration.
