Biography

Andrew Pomiankowski holds the position of JBS Haldane Professor of Genetics and serves as the Director of the Division of Biosciences at University College London (UCL). He obtained his undergraduate degree in Zoology from the University of Oxford, achieving First Class Honours and the Gibbs Prize. He completed his PhD at the University of Sussex, working under the guidance of Professor John Maynard Smith. During his doctoral studies, he spent a year in the laboratory of Professor Dick Lewontin at Harvard University as a Kennedy Fellow. He has held various post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Oxford, including SERC Research Fellowship and Junior/Senior Research Fellowships at Keble College. In 1991, he moved to UCL on a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, where he has made significant contributions to the field of genetics, evolution, and environment. He became a Reader in 1996 and was promoted to Professor in 2001. Under his leadership, the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment has expanded significantly, focusing on major research themes such as biodiversity and healthy aging. He also directed CoMPLEX, an interdisciplinary center that combined mathematics, physics, and biology. Pomiankowski is actively involved in advisory activities, media enquiries, and supervision of research degrees at UCL.
