Biography

Andrew Seaton is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at University College London’s Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences. He specializes in modern British history focusing on political history, social history, and the history of medicine and the environment. Seaton recently joined UCL in October 2023 after serving as a Junior Research Fellow in History at St Anne's College, University of Oxford. He trained both in the UK and the USA, earning his PhD in History from New York University in 2021. His first book, 'NHS: History Britain's Best-Loved Institution' published by Yale University Press in 2023, provides an expansive overview of the UK's universal health care system through various perspectives including patients, medical practitioners, and cultural figures. The book has received accolades such as being shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize and winning the Morris D. Forkosch Prize from the American Historical Association. As part of his Leverhulme Fellowship, he is currently writing a new book on environmental history, provisionally titled 'Ends Coal', which investigates Britain's relationship with coal since 1800. Andrew actively engages with media and public discussions, having appeared on BBC Radio and contributed to various publications.
