Biography

Andrew Sommerlad is a Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at University College London, where he leads research focused on the nature, causes, and consequences of social functioning impairment in people with dementia. He commenced his training in Old Age Psychiatry at University College London and obtained a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Research in 2015. Sommerlad was awarded a Research Training Fellowship by the Wellcome Trust and completed his PhD in 2019, examining the influence of social contact on the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Following his doctoral studies, he became a postdoctoral fellow funded by the UCL/Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Fund and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. He has extensive clinical experience working in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry settings, and is a consultant psychiatrist at the Islington Memory Service. Sommerlad is an approved practitioner under section 12 of the Mental Health Act, indicating his experience in mental health assessments.
