Dr. Andrew Stockman

Biography

Professor Stockman completed his undergraduate studies in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and went on to earn a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, where he researched human color vision under the supervision of John Mollon. After graduating in 1984, he was awarded a NATO/SERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he worked with Donald MacLeod for 17 years, transitioning from PostDoc to Senior Research Scientist while obtaining numerous NSF and NIH grants. His research has broadened to include areas like color vision, flicker interactions, rod vision, visual sensitivity, and molecular genetics. In 2001, he was appointed the Steers Professor of Investigative Eye Research at University College London’s Institute of Ophthalmology and has held the position of Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital since 2004. At UCL, he has continued foundational vision research and initiated collaborations focused on clinical vision research, leading the Visual Neuroscience Function theme from 2020-2025. He has served as Chair of the Colour Vision technical division of the Optical Society of America and has been influential in the Colour Group (GB). Furthermore, he's the Editor-in-Chief of Color Research Application from 2021 to 2024 and currently holds the Qiushi Chair Professor position at Zhejiang University since 2022. He developed the Colour Vision Research Laboratories Database, an essential resource for vision research.
