Andrew Sutherland received his S.B. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1990. After a successful career as an entrepreneur in the software industry, he returned to MIT, where he completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2007 under the supervision of Michael Sipser. He was awarded the George M. Sprowls Prize for his thesis. Sutherland joined the MIT Department of Mathematics as a Research Scientist in 2009 and was promoted to Principal Research Scientist in 2012, and then to Senior Research Scientist in 2024. His research focuses on computational aspects of number theory and arithmetic geometry. He was awarded the Selfridge Prize in 2012 for his work in these areas. Sutherland has played a key role in large-scale collaborations in number theory, including the Polymath project on bounded gaps between primes and the L-functions and modular forms database. Together with Bjorn Poonen, he leads the MIT node of the Simons Collaboration on Arithmetic Geometry, Number Theory, and Computation. Sutherland also serves as an Associate Editor for Mathematics of Computation, Editor-in-Chief for Research in Number Theory, Managing Editor of the L-functions and Modular Forms Database, and is a Scientific Advisor and Board member for the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, as well as President of the Number Theory Foundation. He was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in the 2021 class.
