Andrew attended Queen Mary College, University of London, where he attained a first-class honors degree in Biochemistry. He completed his D.Phil studies at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Dr. Neville Osborne at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology. Andrew spent years at Bristol Myers Squibb in Princeton, New Jersey, working with Mariano Barbacid on oncogene discovery. Returning to the UK in 1991, he became a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Leicester with Stefan Nahorski, researching the mechanisms of regulation of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). In 1996, he established an independent group as a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow, focusing on physiological functions and modes of drug action on GPCRs. His group developed novel genetic and chemical-genetic mouse models to investigate GPCR biology and their role in human diseases, particularly neurodegeneration and malaria. Andrew has established the Centre for Translational Pharmacology at the University of Glasgow, integrating his interests in GPCRs and protein kinases to advance the rational design of next-generation drugs. His primary research areas include understanding receptor post-translational modifications, proteomic and pharmacological approaches for developing anti-malarials, and innovating drug discovery to address failures in therapeutic efficacy.
