Dr. Andries Coetzee

Biography

Andries Coetzee is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. His research interests encompass phonetics, speech processing, and phonological theory, with a focus on the interfaces between these areas. Working in close collaboration with Pam Beddor, his research has investigated the relationship between speech production and perception, utilizing advanced techniques such as eye-tracking, airflow measures, and ultrasound imaging. He aims to understand how individual differences affect perception and production and the role these factors play in sound change. Coetzee also documents the phonetics and phonology of Southern African languages, particularly Afrikaans. His significant contributions to phonological theory include constraints-based models like Optimality Theory and Harmonic Grammar. He teaches courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, advising numerous students on their research. His editorial contributions include serving as an editor for the Linguistic Society of America's flagship journal, Language, and he has been involved in various committees within Linguistics and the broader university community. Additionally, he holds the title of Extraordinary Professor at North-West University in South Africa and was inducted as a fellow of the LSA in 2015.
