Biography

Andy Gibson is an Associate Professor specializing in Patient Public Involvement at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol. His expertise lies in the social sciences, with a focus on enhancing public involvement in health research. As the academic lead for the People Health West England initiative, Andy has been instrumental in developing collaborative efforts to support public engagement in health research. He has significantly contributed to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration within the West of England, as well as partnerships with Bristol Biomedical Research Centre and Healthwatch South West. Andy has previously led the development of innovative models for public involvement at the Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, which has gained national recognition. His research interests predominantly focus on public involvement in diverse health research areas, including work with marginalized groups such as those affected by dementia. Furthermore, Andy has developed frameworks for understanding public involvement's practical utility and is a major contributor to initiatives that evaluate and plan public engagement in research. He has also played a key role in organizing national conferences that address building an evidence base for public involvement, ensuring that public perspectives are integrated into health research processes.
