Biography

Andy Hoffer, born in Montevideo, Uruguay, studied engineering before moving to the United States for further education. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in 1970 and a PhD in Biophysics from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta, he joined the Laboratory of Neural Control at the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a Staff Fellow. In 1982, he transitioned to the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor and later became a full professor, where he focused on developing implantable sensing technologies. In 1991, he moved to Simon Fraser University, eventually directing the Neurokinesiology Laboratory. Dr. Hoffer established several biotechnology startups, including Neurostream Technologies, Bionic Power, and Lungpacer Medical. His research primarily addresses the functioning of peripheral sensory motor neurons, the development of assistive devices for functional rehabilitation, and responding to neurological and neuromuscular disorders. His work has led to numerous publications and patents in the fields of neuroprosthetics and assistive technologies.
